RESCUE ME!!!
If a sudden lyrical refrain from singer Fontella Bass’s hit 45 PRM single of 1965 (by the same name) pops into your mind when you read the above, you’re older than you care to admit. If the US Coast Guard jumps to the focus of your attention, you’ve likely been watching too many ‘Police’ and ‘Emergency’ TV shows, while if the reverse is true (nothing at all suddenly emerges in your recollections), you’re likely too young to worry about anything having to do with salvation (…

My family (including stitch, my shiba inu) will be moving to the McCully area. I'm looking for a vet closer to home and stitch was going to Kapalama pet but too far from home. Anyone know of any vet doctors that are good.

Anyone know of any organization that will take used dog toys? I have some old tennis balls (used for tennis, not by my dog) and some gently used dog toys. I live on the windward side and don't want to drive past the PC to Kaimuki areas to donate, but if there is someone at an organization that will meet me or I can drop them off at a pet store in the areas listed, I can get it there.

I have been thinking about the way that pets are used to help those having surgery. When my son had a procedure last year, they used a dog to help calm him down so they could start the IV. I think it is great how animals are used in this way. To see a child who is scared to death because he is having
Heart surgery crack a smile is worth its weight in gold.
Use more animals in this way!

We are considering taking our cockapoo to Europe. She has a number of health problems and we were wondering what sort of medical care would be available there. We also received a
Travel insurance quote in case something happened in transit. Do you know what a fair price might be for a two week trip?

We have a 3 1/2 year old Maltese dog that is highly photogenic and we are wondering if there is a demand in hawaii for dog pictures, commercials, etc. If anyone knows of any such place, please let us, and yoshi, know. He has had some instructions, gets on well with everyone, travels well and rar…

Aloha fellow canine owners! I just recently wrote an article about the canine flu virusu (CIV) or H3N8. It has not been confirmed in HI yet but some vets are concerned that if it does make it here it will spread as fast as parvo. If you get a minute you may want to check out the article so you are at least aware of what to look for. Let me know if you have any questions about it.

Has anyone out there had their dog accused of this and actually gone to court over it? The complainer gets a deputy prosecuting attorney, I'm not entitled to a public defender and cannot afford to hire a lawyer. Just looking for someone who has been there and gone through it, who doesn't mind sharing what the experience is like.
I was home when the supposed violation occurred (noon on Memorial Day) and can say that I would never let my dog bark for 10 minutes non-stop, but how does one define "…

I am a proud owner of a shih tzu and I am temporarily fostering another shih tzu. I am interested in learning how to groom dogs and possibly becoming a professional groomer. Aside from grooming my own dog and a couple of my friend's dogs, I have no real grooming experience. Does anyone know of a place that teaches dog grooming? Or if you are a professional groomer looking for an assistant, willing to teach, or know of someone? I have a regular full-time job M-F, 8-5, but I am free in the evening…

KIDS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Submitted by the Hawaii Dog Foundation, www.hawaiidogfoundation.org
With the back to school season upon us, our thoughts turn to the lessons that our children will learn in the classroom. Will I be able to help my daughter with her advanced calculus homework? Did I remember to label all of my son’s crayons? What time do we have to leave home to get to school on time?
In the midst of this frenzy, it is easy to forget that there are m…

Gaining Respect in a Doggy World
By Hideo Hanashiro, Hele Wiki Paws
“Back to School.” Just the words bring up the memory of Rodney Dangerfield stepping onto campus in a vivid pair of golfing pants. Rodney Dangerfield himself has always seemed to remind me of that painting with the dogs playing poker. They couldn’t seem to ever get respect. Everyone in the pet loving world knows that dogs deserve every bit of our respect. Therefore, I would like to point out a few…

SUMMER IS OVER? What do I do with Fido?
Submitted by Allen Daniels • Paws University • www.pawsuniversity.com
Unfortunately for most people, summer has quickly ended. School-aged children are back in school and a major disruption in the household routine has occurred. No longer is anyone sleeping in or spending most of the day at home. At sunrise, the house has now come to life and the hustle and bustle of the preparation of both work and school is at times an over…

If you are looking for a moderate to advanced hike I recommend taking an Adventure along Ka’iwa Ridge to the Kailua pillboxes, also known as the Lanikai bunkers. The two pillboxes were built by the military in World War II to help keep a watchful eye on the Pacific. The trailhead is on Kaeleulu Drive in Lanikai, it is opposite of Mid-Pacific Country Club. Remember, this is a residential area, so please be respectful of the homeowners.
I’ve taken many dogs on this hike, it can be challenging in t…
